72nd Annual Fiesta de las Flores Rescheduled to May 14, 2022
Fiesta de las Flores is an event that brings the Hondo community together to host dancers, volunteers and guests from near and far. When COVID-19 first impacted our school and community and we were forced to cancel the 2020 Fiesta, the Hondo Valley Public Schools and the Fiesta’s volunteer board held out hope to have the event this year. However, with only four weeks left until the planned 2021 Fiesta, there are many variables that are out of our control, potentially impacting the health and welfare of our participants and attendees. The safety of our dancers, instructors, guests, staff and volunteers has always been our top concern and in the wake of COVID-19 and its continued impacts, we must stay dedicated to upholding that commitment.
The Hondo Valley Public School Administration and Fiesta’s volunteer board of directors have brainstormed many different ways to make the 72nd Fiesta occur this May. We’ve created various contingency plans and approaches but know that all of those fail if someone contracted COVID-19 as the result of attending our event. For that reason, we are postponing the 72nd to May 14, 2022.
While the process for this decision has been thoughtful and extensive, ultimately the following factors most contributed to our decision:
- Health & Safety: Like the rest of the world, we are hopeful that the effects of COVID-19 will diminish. However, without a clear understanding of Lincoln County’s COVID-19 red to turquoise rating or the applicable New Mexico Public Health Order this May, we can’t proceed with plans that could put anyone participating in or attending Fiesta at risk.
- HVPS Athletic Scheduling: The 2021 compressed New Mexico school’s athletic schedules run in conflict with the Fiesta dance practices that usually begin in March. With volleyball and basketball practices and games running into May, HVPS does not have practice space for Fiesta dancers, and the schedule leaves little or no time for 7-12 grades to practice and prepare for Fiesta.
To celebrate and honor the long standing tradition of Fiesta de las Flores, HVPS is creating a compilation video of past Fiesta performances. Please look for this video later this month on the HVPS Website and the HVPS Facebook Page.
HVPS is proud of the event Fiesta de las Flores has grown into over the years. We know that there is an entire community invested in its success, making this one of the most difficult decisions Hondo Valley Public Schools has faced during the pandemic. This is certainly a setback, but we remain committed to making this one of the best annual school events and can’t wait to see the HVPS gym once again filled with dancers and smiling faces.
